Rachel calls Noah Clay, her ex-boyfriend and a video analyst , for assistance. Rachel learns later that Aidan (her son who was with Noah) was watching the tape and informed her that he believed her. Rachel investigates the lighthouse on the tape and discovers that it is located on Moesko Island, the home of a slain horse breeder known as Anna Morgan, who appeared on the cursed videotape. When she investigates, Rachel discovers Anna had an adopted daughter, named Samara, who possessed the ability to create disturbing images into the minds of humans or animals, as well as objects. Rachel encounters Anna's widower Richard. Richard demands Rachel leave as soon as she begins to ask questions regarding Samara.
